Education not only provides individuals with knowledge and skills to help them navigate their immediate circumstances, but it also helps them to prepare for a more self-sufficient future. Education is the basis of the development of any society. In impoverished communities, it is nearly impossible for students to receive a quality education. Schools are underfunded, classrooms are overcrowded, and teachers have little governmental support, resulting in their students’ needs remaining unmet.

Our Region

The Maynas region holds the lowest educational proficiency in the entire country of Peru. Only 46% of the population has completed primary education, with only 28% completing secondary education. With this region having one of the smallest budgets in the country, they were unable to provide a majority of their schools with virtual learning resources during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Today, this has resulted in students returning to in-person classes based on their age, not their education level, causing them to fall even further behind.

Our Partner

To ensure our program is as effective as possible, we work alongside the Local Educational Management Unit of Maynas (UGEL) to implement our program in the highest-risk schools. Working alongside local leaders and institutions is a vital part of our organization’s mission and a critical component of our program’s success. Through this partnership, we are able to combine our resources to better serve this generation of students.

Equipping Students

We partner with remote communities that have limited resources and implement our education program in the local school.

Through our after school program, students meet regularly with tutors to receive academic help, learning resources and nutritious meals. In addition to education, our students are taught essential life and leadership skills. Our program is designed to offer a safe space for children to learn, develop and grow.

Providing Mentorship

We take a holistic approach to supporting the children we work alongside, which includes meeting their emotional and spiritual needs. Every Monday, we open our doors to the children in our education program and surrounding community and host Joy Club. This program consists of games, Bible stories, worship and time spent in small groups led by designated mentors.

Our goal is to create an environment that fosters relationships between these children and a loving mentor that will provide them with guidance as they grow emotionally and spiritually.

Empowering Parents

It’s important to us that we not only work with children who need academic help but that we work alongside their parents as well. In order to ensure our students are successful inside and outside of the classroom, we equip the parents to support their learning by hosting regular parent workshops.

Our students’ parents meet with our teachers to hear about their children’s academic progress and learn how to better support their children in the classroom. In addition, we make time for open conversation to address difficulties the parents face when trying to prioritize their children’s education.
